OS-CAL (Calcium Carbonate) or Calcium Citrate?

Cost efficiences with OS-CAL

OS-CAL is more cost efficient than Citracal®

Each caplet of OS-CAL contains approximately 60% more elemental calcium compared with Citracal®.1 A cost-effectiveness analysis2 published in 2001 compared OS-CAL and Citracal®, and reported the following:

  • The cost of Citracal® was 1.5-1.8 times higher than OS-CAL per gram of elemental calcium2
  • "Providing OS-CAL to all US women aged 75 and older for 2.83 years was estimated to be cost effective, saving $100 million in hip-fracture-related costs per year; by contrast, providing Citracal® was not estimated to be cost effective"1
  • The annual cost of providing 1000 mg of OS-CAL was estimated at <$70 per person2
